About Feeding Military Families
Food insecurity among service members, veterans, and their families is an ongoing challenge, affecting over 22,000 active-duty families, 213,000 National Guard/Reservist families, and 1.2 million veterans across the United States. While the commitment of military personnel to our country is unwavering, many face the harsh reality of struggling to put food on the table.
Recognizing this need, the Satellite Rotary Club of Military Family Support launched Feeding Military Families in 2022 to provide direct support to military households experiencing food insecurity. Since then, we have distributed over 27 tons of food and essential supplies to military families across branches, including the Army, Marine Corps, and Navy, through partnerships with:
- Pelican Pantry – Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms
- Marine Corps Camp Pendleton Food Pantry
- 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Blackhorse Chapel Food Pantry – Fort Irwin
In March 2025, we are expanding our reach to include the Air Force and Space Force families at the Los Angeles Air Force Base food pantry.

Why Food Insecurity Matters
According to a 2020 study by the RAND Corporation, over 25% of active-duty service members experience food insecurity, highlighting the significant barriers to accessing adequate nutrition. Factors such as frequent relocations, gaps in spousal employment, limited financial literacy, and the stigma surrounding food assistance contribute to this crisis.
Despite available government support, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Family Supplemental Subsistence Allowance (FSSA), research shows that participation rates remain low, with only 14% of food-insecure military families accessing aid. Many service members fear career repercussions or lack awareness of available resources.
By bridging this gap through direct food distribution, Feeding Military Families provides dignified, immediate support where it is needed most.

Resources
The report highlights that food insecurity among military families is a persistent issue linked to both structural and financial factors. While assistance programs exist, stigma, eligibility barriers, and logistical challenges prevent many service members from accessing the support they need. The document underscores the need for policy adjustments and program improvements to ensure all military families have reliable access to nutritious food
